From the Desk of Congressman Kurt Schrader

Dear Neighbor –

As the 114th Congress comes to an end I wanted to tell you about a great bipartisan bill we’ve been working on that passed in the House this week with overwhelming support from both parties.

Working together, Democrats and Republicans were able to find common ground on a number of chronic health care issues and needs facing folks across the country. Together we produced the 21st Century Cures Act, which takes great steps toward providing better health care for millions of Americans.

Among some of the biggest provisions in the bill are major fixes to our mental health care infrastructure, streamlining the approval process on life-saving medicine and devices for vulnerable populations like seniors with cancer and newborn infants, funding for life-saving research like the Vice-President’s Cancer Moonshot initiative, $1 billion to fight the opioid epidemic that’s been ravaging communities across Oregon and the entire country, and my own legislation that will greatly expand access to Medicare.

I spoke on the House floor before the vote about the significance of this bill and some of its most important accomplishes. You can watch my full remarks here:

This bill is an example of the bipartisan work that this Congress has been able to accomplish for our neighbors like you back at home. As we move forward, I hope that our President-elect and our members of the new Congress take note of achievements like this, rather than push through divisive, harmful policies that will reduce access to quality health care. I hope that we can continue to work together to find common area to produce better results for all Americans.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact my office with any opinions or issues you may be having with federal agencies.
