From the Desk of Congressman Kurt Schrader
During a long weekend at home, I had the honor to join the Oregon National Guard Company G, 1st Battalion 1-189th Aviation Regiment at their mobilization ceremony. The medical evacuation helicopter unit has been critical to rescue and fire suppression efforts at home, and approximately 67 members of the unit are heading to Kuwait.

I got to play host to a group of students from my hometown’s high school in Canby for an afternoon. We talked about everything from education to immigration reform to national defense to even the importance of NASA’s work.

I introduced a bill this month that would prohibit any hiring freeze at the Department of Veterans Affairs, so that our veterans don’t have to wait to get necessary care due to vacant positions for doctors, nurses, and support staff.

Your Oregon Democratic delegation sent a letter to President Trump after his administration’s decision to freeze EPA grants. Freezing these grants would delay critical projects in our state, and undermine fundamental public health and environmental protections. Read the letter here.

In the beginning of the month, I spearheaded a letter to Speaker Ryan about ways we can work together to make improvements on the ACA. I refuse to support an agenda that outright repeals the ACA which would be disastrous for millions of folks, and virtually all of them are middle- and low-income. Read my full letter here.

Before his inauguration, I sent a letter to then President-elect Trump urging him to maintain a policy agenda that ensures access to critical health care for women. And just this past week, I cosponsored the Global HER Act, to end a decades-long back-and-forth in US policy and ensure that eligible foreign NGOs can continue to operate US-supported health programs abroad, especially those for women. Read my full letter here.
