Statement on the Ongoing Situation with Iran
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Kurt Schrader (OR-05) issued the following statement on the ongoing situation with Iran:
“Since I came to Congress in 2009, I have adamantly opposed military intervention in the Middle East except when absolutely necessary to protect American troops stationed there and to keep terrorists from reaching American shores. I remain staunchly opposed to U.S. involvement in another costly conflict in the Middle East.”
“Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani was an enemy of our country and personally responsible for attacks on Americans and our allies. I commend the excellent job of our military for the swift and strategic removal of an enemy of America.”
“For the last decade, I have advocated for an updated Authorization for Use of Military Force to rein in the immense latitude the Executive branch has when it comes to matters of war. The current Authorization for Use of Military Force has been in place for eighteen years and is woefully outdated. I have supported multiple repeals of the 2002 AUMF and will continue to do so. It is time for Congress to reassert our Constitutionally granted war-making powers.”
