WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Kurt Schrader (OR-05) announced his co-sponsorship of the 100% Clean Economy Act of 2019 today. This legislation sets a nationwide goal of achieving a 100 percent clean energy economy, defined as economy-wide net-zero greenhouse gas pollution, by 2050. It has the support of the entire Oregon Democratic Congressional Delegation.
“The devastating effects of climate change are real, and they are here,” said Rep. Schrader. “I am committed to serious climate action and that means moving our country to a 100 percent clean economy. This legislation will ensure that our planet is protected while strengthening our economy and creating new green-collar jobs.”
The 100% Clean Economy Act of 2019 directs all federal agencies and stakeholders to create plans to achieve a net-zero emissions goal by 2050, using all of the technology, resources, and authority at their disposal. It also creates a broadly diverse advisory group to make recommendations to the government as these plans are developed, including union representatives, scientists, state and local officials, farmers, conservationists, manufacturers and more. The bill outlines clear principles for federal action including:
· Enhancing job creation and ensuring an equitable transition for workers in industries and communities affected by changes in the energy sector
· Improving public health programs, especially for low income and rural communities
· Preparing consumers, small businesses and rural communities for the impacts of climate change
Representative Schrader believes in an all of the above strategy to encourage investments in renewable energy and that legislation such as this is key to reducing and reversing the effects of global climate change. He has supported increases in fuel efficiency standards and reduction requirements for carbon emissions. As a member of the Energy Subcommittee of the Energy & Commerce Committee, he continues to advocate for renewable energy and for sustainable solutions to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Representative Schrader has supported the Climate Action Now Act, introduced this Congress, and has been vocal in his opposition to the Trump Administration’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement.
