Rep. Schrader Votes to Protect Our Democracy Against Foreign Attacks
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congressman Kurt Schrader (OR-05) voted today for the Stopping Harmful Interference in Elections for Lasting Democracy (SHIELD) Act. This bill strengthens reporting requirements, closes loopholes and deters illegal foreign activity in American elections.
“There is no place for foreign interference in our elections, said Rep. Kurt Schrader. This is a strong, commonsense bill that will safeguard our elections as 2020 fast approaches. We have a duty to protect our most sacred right to vote and ensure that every American’s vote matters.”
The SHIELD Act would create a duty to report illicit offers of campaign assistance from foreign governments, help prevent foreign interferences in future elections by improving transparency of online political advertisements and close loopholes that allow foreign governments to spend money in U.S. elections. It would also restrict the exchange of campaign information between candidates and foreign governments and their agents and prohibit misdirection designed to create confusion about voting rules.
