Congressman Kurt Schrader (OR-05) issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s cancellation of an air strike on Iran:

“The ongoing situation with Iran is dangerous and rapidly evolving. The President’s decision to abort a retaliatory air strike that would have led to hundreds of civilian casualties was indeed the right one. However, this is not a time to engage in reckless diplomacy via Twitter. We must rely on strategy and work with our global allies to make educated decisions that advance American interests.”

“For too long Congress has given up our Constitutional war-making powers. It was easier to push the decision to go to war onto the Executive branch and complain about their decisions afterwards. I continue to work with my colleagues on efforts to reclaim this vital and somber duty. This month, I signed a letter to the leaders of the House Armed Services Committee requesting they include language prohibiting any military conflict with Iran with certain exemptions into the upcoming defense authorization bill. In May, I joined with my colleagues and made it clear to the President that we oppose military action against Iran without Congressional approval. Additionally, I am a co-sponsor of the Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act of 2019. This legislation would prevent the Trump Administration from using funds for military operations with Iran unless authorized by Congress.”

“I will continue to closely monitor all developments in the region and work with my colleagues to find solutions that de-escalate present tensions and keep us out of another unnecessary war.”
