Rep. Schrader Reacts to President’s First State of the Union

Congressman Kurt Schrader released the following statement in response to the President’s first State of the Union Address:

“My focus tonight wasn’t on anything this over-promise, under-deliver President said, but rather on the skeleton patch funding bills that have barely sustained us each month and the long-term budget that we have yet to write. I thought about the dire need to update our roads and bridges throughout Oregon, the community health centers which my rural neighbors rely on that still don’t have funding, and the billions of dollars in student loans that are keeping our kids and grandkids under water. I thought about my guest, Juan Carlos Navarro, and the hundreds of thousands of young folks across this country who will lose their status and fall quickly back into the shadows unless we in Congress act. It is our responsibility as the legislating body – not the responsibly of the President – to write our laws and there is still so much work to be done.”

Congressman Schrader invited Juan Carlos Navarro of Monmouth, Oregon, a graduate student of Oregon State University and recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, to join him as his guest at the State of the Union.
